Sprint car racer Dave Steele died during a weekend race at Desoto Speedway in Bradenton, FL in what appeared to be a routine wreck on the first turn of the 35-lap feature race.
It’s the kind of thing no one wants to see, but Steele was such a significant presence in pavement sprint car racing, that we also couldn’t ignore it.
Steve Cole Smith wrote a great tribute which we read in Sports Illustrated, but was originally published here at The Drive.
According to Smith, Steele “won pretty much everything you can in pavement, short-track, open-wheel racing” and he also made starts in IndyCar, NASCAR Xfinity, and ARCA races.
You should give Smith’s story a read.
Steele is survived by his wife and three children. The thoughts and prayers of all of us at The Speed Article® and Summit Racing families are with them and everyone touched by Steele’s passing.
